A couple of developments in the mobile applications space have my head spinning. First, the LiMo Foundation announced it has increased its membership by adding six new members. Then, Yahoo introduced its mobile developer platform at CES, taking pains to point out that its apps will be compatible with pretty much any mobile platform - including Android.

When it comes to being open, Yahoo is saying, "Me too!" The latest buzz among Internet companies is to have an "open" platform, letting outside developers create "widgets," or software applications, for a Web site. Thus, Facebook opened up its site last year and has seen a flood of applications since. LinkedIn recently followed in Facebook's footsteps. Meanwhile, Google is touting Android, its new - and open! - platform for mobile phones.

Apple's heavily promoted iPhone ended 2007 as what one analyst says is the fastest-growing consumer electronics product ever. Research analysts expect sales to top Apple's projections for 2008. However, don't look for a new model early this year, analysts say. Apple historically makes new-product announcements at the Macworld conference, scheduled this year for Jan. 14. Many fans are looking for Apple CEO Steve Jobs to introduce a possibly smaller iPhone.

The iPhone - or, better said, the Apple-branded mobile-iPod combination - has been talked about for years, and even the realisation that the name iPhone is registered to Linksys hasn't stopped iPod and Mac fans everywhere spinning the rumour mill day after day. Now, TecheBlog may have revealed the real thing - an Apple branded mobile phone named the iChat Portable.

Apple's iPhone has been the subject of some of the biggest controversy in consumer gadgets since the leadup to the Playstation 3 launch. From Intel's claim that the heart of the iPhone is an Xscale chip, to Ballmer's proclamation that the upcoming mobile is "the most expensive on the market," nothing can dissuade Apple's potential fanbase. But the latest news about the Apple-branded smartphone may knock even the most dedicated Apple fanboys from their pedestals.

Eyes can listen too: Researchers have developed a new audio service for cell phone radios in which the sound is accompanied with matching images – such as CD covers or concert photos. Sound and image take up only a quarter of the bandwidth of conventional radios.
