IBM disclosed a cross-company project to integrate the Cell Broadband Engine; (Cell/B.E.) with the IBM mainframe for the purpose of creating a hybrid that is blazingly fast and powerful, with security features designed to handle a new generation of "virtual world" applications, such as the 3D Internet.

Trolltech released the final Qt® Jambi&; beta ; its cross-platform, rich client application development framework for Java& ; to its commercial customers and the open source community for testing and feedback. The final release of Qt Jambi is scheduled for early June. The second beta release incorporates feedback from three technical preview releases, one beta and over 7300 downloads of Qt Jambi to date. System p AVE, a new IBM offering, was made available Monday in a beta release. The new software is able to circumvent the Linux software's binary break, which prevents binary files designed for one processor from working on a different processor. The results, says IBM, allows many Linux apps to run on the System p Unix platform with unmodified code.

Web surfers dying to know the "real" lyrics to a song will have a new resource at their disposal. Yahoo and Gracenote have joined to offer the words of thousands of songs online in a format that that firms say avoids some of the more troublesome aspects of lyrics searching -- pop-up ads, copyright violations and flat-out wrong words.

Astronomers studying Gliese 581, a red dwarf star more than 20 light years away, have announced the discovery of a planet that may feature the most Earth-like conditions of any place ever observed outside our own solar system. Further study, however, is very difficult and it may take many years to learn any more information about the planet.

A Georgia Tech research team has discovered that water exhibits very different properties when it is confined to channels less than two nanometers wide - behaving much like a viscous fluid with a viscosity approaching that of molasses. Determining the properties of water on the nanoscale may prove important for biological and pharmaceutical research as well as nanotechnology. The research appears in the March 15 issue of the journal Physical Review B.
